Computer Advice Questions

E-mail your computer questions to asktom.tomshayconsulting.com and I will answer them on this page or write a column about them if the answer is to large.

Question: How do you get programs to stop loading when you start up the computer? It takes awhile to load up in the morning because of these programs.

Answer Part 2:

2. Use the “MSConfig System Configuration Utility”. With the utility MSConfig it is possible to analyze all the applications starting when you turn on your computer and, if you feel the need to do so, disable undesirable items. Turning off undesirable items will save system resources which will eventually result in a faster Windows.

You can start the MSConfig utility by Clicking on the Start Button, then click on Run and type the command MSCONFIG and press ENTER. You will see this screen below.

3. The only tab you want is called “Startup”. Don’t make any changes in the other tabs, because you could cause more problems.

4. Here you can disable or enable programs that startup as you start your computer. Important: Always make sure you know what program you are disabling. Look at the Startup Item List and the Command List to see what program is. One way to find out what the program is: Go to www.google.com and type in the search box, the “Startup Item” name.

Example:

Startup Item Name: itype
Google Search shows this information: “ itype.exe is a process belonging to Microsoft Intellitype Pro keyboard software. Disabling or enabling it is down to user preference.” On this one, you can disable it or leave it alone.
