Phishing/Spoofing

What do the words Phishing or Spoofing mean?

Phishing means that someone sets up a fake website that looks like the login page for a Bank account, Ebay, Pay Pal, and  many other websites where you have financial information.

What they do next is send out mass emails, (the bait or spoofing), that look like they are coming from reliable company that you trust.

They use the real websites color's, design's, and logo's.  What they do is send you an email saying you have to verify your account or give some other reason to get you to login to your account.  They will have a few links in the email that point to the fake website.

If you check out the address it will look real at first glance.  But if you look closely it is a different spelling.  Example, if the real address is www.paypal.com, but the address in the email will be www.paypal.xyz.com.

When you click on the link in the email it will send to you to the fake website.  When you logon you will end up giving the Spammers your passwords, credit card numbers, and bank account information.

How to protect yourself from Phishing/Spoofing Scams.

  • Never click on an link inside an unsolicited email to get to one of your account's login page.

  • Be suspicious of any unsolicited email requesting personal information.

  • If an email asks you to logon to one of your accounts to verify anything, get the address from your favorites or a google search.

  • Contact the real business to verify that they send the email.
