Undelete Files

Have you ever deleted a file and then a few minutes later think, why did I do that?  It happens all the time.  A great free program that you can use to get back your deleted files is called FreeUndelete.

I have used this program with great results.

With FreeUndelete you can highlight the drive you want to scan and then click on the button to scan that drive.  I have highlighted the C:\ drive in this example.

Your results will look like this.

What you need to do next is pick a folder to recover the deleted file to.  I made a folder called Undeleted Files.  You click the Browse button on the bottom of the program and find the folder you want.

Highlight the file you want to undelete by clicking on it and then click on the Undelete button.  This will restore the file.

Issues with FreeUndelete Program

When you delete a file, the file itself is not deleted, just the index to the file is deleted. The file itself is still on the hard drive. How the file gets corrupted is when you save other files, defrag you computer, and also by RAM, as RAM uses some of the hard drive space to work.

If the status is anything other than Good, the file might be corrupt. You can undelete the file and try and open it.

You need to make sure that you don't undelete the recovered file into the same DRIVE that it came from. If you try to do this you will get this error: "Cannot undelete To Drive letter:" You can undelete files into another Hard Drive or Flash Drive.
