System Restore

Everyone should learn how to use Microsoft’s System Restore.  With all the things that can go wrong with computer now a days, Spyware, viruses, bad installs the average person needs to be able to Restore his PC back to a working state.  System Restore sets a Restore Point, which is a snapshot of your computer at that time and then at a later date you will be able to restore your computer to that working condition.

System Restore will automatically create restore points when you do certain actions, like installing new software, drivers and some automatic updates.  It’s a very good idea to know how to set a Manual Restore Point.  I like to set a restore point before I do any deleting of programs, cleaning off viruses/Spyware, ECT.  This way if anything go’s wrong; you can get your computer back to a working state.  I then like to set another restore point after I get the computer running great.

Backups

One of the worst things that can happen to you is loosing your personal pictures, important documents, and even great programs that you use.  Backing up your PC should be one of your main priorities.  With the use of digital cameras, many people hundreds, even thousands of pictures stored on one computer and no backups of them.  I also know of many people who have lost all their pictures because of hard drive failure.  This is one of the most common problems that can happen to your PC.  Protect yourself against this common computer issue.

Firewalls

If you are connected to the internet, you NEED to have a FIREWALL installed and running.  A firewall is a software or hardware program that protects your computer from hackers, Spyware and Viruses.  Now the issue is do you need to buy a firewall or use a free one.  If you have Windows XP, you are covered, as XP has a built-in firewall.  If you have another
operating system you will need to download a free version or paid version from somewhere.  I recommend ZoneAlarm, as their free firewall gives you great protection.   Click on the link below to learn more and download your free firewall.

You need to make sure your computer is regularly downloads and installs updates from Microsoft.  These updates help your computer run smoother and fix security holes in your operating system.  These updates will help protect you from Hackers and other Spyware/Viruses while you are on the internet.

There are two different kinds of updates.  High-Priority and Optional updates.  I recommend that you turn on Automatic Updates and your computer will download all the updates and install them for you.

Defrag your PC

Now I know sometimes you might want to put a Frag Grenade inside your computer and blow it up.  ;-)  There are better ways to treat your computer.  Knowing how to defrag your hard drive is one way to treat it.

Why do I need to defrag my computer?  When files are saved on your hard drive, sometimes they are not saved all in one spot on your hard drive.  They get broken up and are saved in two or three different spots on the hard drive.  When you defrag your computer, you take each file and programs and put them in order on your hard drive.  When you are done defragging your computer, it will run faster and smoother.  The files are in order and it makes it easier for the computer to access them.

Clean out the Dust from inside your PC

Just like you have to dust your house, you also have to clean out the dust from inside your computer.  Computers attract dust inside their case and it can cause overheating of the electric parts.  When too much dust builds up inside your PC, the computer components get too hot and will burn out or not run as fast as it should.

The best way to take care of this is to use Canned Compressed Air to blow out the inside of your PC.  Unplug the computer from the power source.  Open up the PC case and take it outside.  Blow out the dust and make sure you blow out the CPU and any fans you see.  Doing this about once a year is always good.  Do not use any household cleaners as they can damage the circuit boards inside your PC.
