In this month’s newsletter we will deal with
 Internet Scams
   A Virus Alert

************************************************************

Internet Scams

Internet scams are on the rise and everyone needs to be informed about
what to look for.  In 2007, of the 206,884 complaints received, more than
90,000 were referred to law enforcement around the nation, amounting
to nearly $240 million in reported losses.  That’s up $40 million from 2006.

This information is from the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which
is a partnership between the FBI, Bureau of Justice Assistance and the
National White Collar Crime Center.  This is the place where you want to
go to file a complaint, if you think you have been a victim of a scam.

Fake Check Scams

Any time someone wants to pay for services or merchandise with a
check and they send you lots more than you were asking, BEWARE.
They will ask you to wire the extra money back to them.

This is a scam that happened to me.  Let me tell you what happened.

Nigerian Money Offers

The email you receive will be from individuals representing themselves
as Nigerian or foreign government officials.  They will give you a chance
to share in a percentage of millions of dollars.  They will ask for help in
moving money from overseas bank accounts to the US.

Phishing / Spoofing

What do the words Phishing or Spoofing mean?  It means that someone
sets up a fake website that looks like the login page for a Bank account,
Ebay, Pay Pal, and  many other websites where you have financial
information. What they do next is send out mass emails, (the bait), that
look like they are coming from reliable company that you trust.

example of a phishing email that I received.

  A Virus Alert

“AntiVirus 2009” is a virus that is spreading fast on the internet.

Antivirus 2009 is spreading across the internet very fast.  I have removed
this virus from computers more and more lately.  Antivirus 2009 is a Rogue
AntiSpyware Program.  A Rogue AntiSpyware program is a fake application
that seems like a real spyware removal program.

These types of Rogue AntiSpyware Programs are very hard to get rid of sometimes.

Click here to learn more about how your computer can get infected
and how you can remove the
AntiVirus 2009 virus.

The best program I have found to remove this virus is called Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

They have a Free Version and a Paid Version.  Read more about
this program by clicking on the link above.
