What is your Computer Registry and How to Backup the Registry.

Viruses and Spyware can and will make changes to your Registry and if you are trying to clean them off your computer, sometimes you need to edit the registry.

The Registry is two files stored on your computer called System.dat and User.dat.  These files have information on every aspect of your computer.

Information about all the hardware inside and connected to your computer, all the  software installed and information about all user profiles.

There are 6 parts to the Registry and each one is called a Key.

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:  Information about your system hardware

  • HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG:  Information about Current Hardware in use.

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT:  Information about file type associations

  • HKEY_USERS:  User Profile Configuration Information

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER:  User Profile Configuration for the logged on user.

  • HKEY_DYN_DATA:  Hardware Device Information Stored in RAM

The Registry is very complicated, and making any changes to it can cause major problems if you are not careful.  One little change can stop your computer from running.

"IMPORTANT"
You need to make sure you know what you are doing before you do any work inside the registry.

This is the reason bad things can happen whenever you install new hardware and software.  When you install something to your computer, it will make changes to the registry.  Sometimes these changes can affect other parts of your computer can cause problems.

This means you should always do a System Restore before you install any hardware or software.  This is the BEST way to make sure you get a good backup of your Registry.  Click here to learn how to do a System Restore.
